Katsumasa was a naturalist and botanical illustrator who drew the pictures for several notable botanical works. This gallery shows the 53 pictures included in volume 1 of a ten volume, woodblock-printed book entitled Ensei Hakujō Gafu (Album of Far West Imports). It was published in 1855. Each was drawn in a life-like way but surprsingly Katsumasa did not know the names of many of the plants that he chose to depict.
